Itinerary
Departure from Phnom Penh
Your journey begins with a hotel pickup in Phnom Penh.
From the bustling capital, travel northwest in a private vehicle car or minivan. The drive to Oudong takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and offers scenic views of the Cambodian countryside — rice paddies, lotus farms, and traditional stilt houses along the way.
Stop at Kampong Luong Silver Village
On the way to Oudong, stop briefly at Kampong Luong, a local village famous for its traditional silverwork.
Here, artisans handcraft silver bowls, jewelry, and ceremonial items — a tradition passed down through generations.
You’ll have the chance to see craftsmen at work and support the local community by purchasing handmade souvenirs.
Arrive at Phnom Oudong (Oudong Hill)
Upon arrival, you’ll begin exploring Phnom Oudong, which served as Cambodia’s royal capital from the early 1600s to the 1860s before the monarchy moved to Phnom Penh.
The hill is dotted with ancient and modern stupas (Buddhist monuments) that house the remains of past Khmer kings and religious relics. The most significant is the stupa containing relics of the Buddha, built with royal and international support.
To reach the top, you’ll climb about 500 steps, but the reward is well worth it: breathtaking panoramic views of the Cambodian plains, distant mountains, and surrounding pagodas.
Visit Vipassana Dhura Buddhist Meditation Center
At the base of Oudong Hill lies one of Cambodia’s most important meditation centers, where monks and laypeople come for Vipassana (insight) meditation.
You may be able to witness monks in daily practice, visit the large Buddha statues, and learn about the role of Buddhism in modern Khmer life.
This peaceful stop offers a spiritual dimension to the tour and a deeper cultural experience.
Local Refreshment or Light Lunch Break
After the climb and temple visits, relax at a local roadside restaurant or food stall.
Enjoy a light Khmer-style snack or drink such as:
• Fresh coconut water or sugarcane juice
• Grilled banana with sticky rice (nom ansom chek)
• Optional: pre-packed lunch or simple local meal (e.g., Khmer noodles or fried rice)
This is also a great time to chat with locals or your guide about Cambodian history and customs.
Return Journey to Phnom Penh
Board your vehicle and begin the return drive to Phnom Penh.
Enjoy the calm rural landscapes once again as you reflect on Oudong’s royal past and spiritual significance.
